Chronic Pain Resources

"My recent trip to Ireland was the first vacation I had in about 15 years. It was the first time I flew since 2008, much less traveling with my transformed body. The time away allowed me to let go of so much of the stress and learn to finally live. We had no schedule which was wonderful.

During the time, I was finally able to appreciate who I have become as a person. Being a gentleman, being kind and compassionate. I acknowledged the tremendous battle I had endured to survive for the past 3 decades. I was able to thank myself for being so strong in times when I had every reason to give up. I finally began forgiving myself for feeling guilty of allowing the physical damage to occur. This was my understanding that I did the best I could which was pretty good given everything which has occurred.

Holding onto to hope does make a difference. I've held onto hope through everything. Today I give that hope to all of you, my gift. Hope has the ability to change lives. Instilled hope has the potential to build better tomorrows."

New Resource Added to our Website:  Share Your Story
Hope Instilled is all about creating a community of people who suffer from chronic pain that can come together to help one another. We all have different ways of handling the chronic pain, and different treatments we have tried. Not one of us knows everything about the treatments out there or the best ways to handle the pain. Our story may have the answers someone else needs or help someone to see they are not alone.

Please consider sharing your story. The writing doesn't have to be perfect, we will make small edits to make sure it's easy to read and follow. You don't have to use your real name, and if it's a bit long we can share it as two blog posts.

Finding HOPE

New Beginnings

Story by: Jory Pradjinski

October 22, 2013

Chronic Pain ResourcesMy new chiropractor is moving me forward with some wonderful work and guidance. From that I wish to write a bit about my determination. My experience has always shown its good knowing who and/or what you're working with, or fighting against.

Through all that life has thrown at me over the past 26 years since the accident, more so with all the surgeries, I've had this demon, monster, or such inside me trying to break me. I've viewed it as such because it's a force that has seemed bent on destroying me mostly physically since I'd always been physical in life. With each surgery it tried to take me down and I fought it back. As things "improved" and I adapted to the changes it attacked again with the need of another surgery. Too much was at stake to ever allow this beast to win. I've always been a fighter, trying to do what some thought couldn't be done. However, the beast kept on, growing stronger and more determined.

Discovering Alternative Treatments: Meditation

If you are interested in learning more about Mindfulness and Meditation, I would recommend reading: "Wherever You Go, There You Are." By: Jon Kabat-Zinn. I read it a few years ago, and I loved it. But, you don't have to take my word, it is a National Bestseller. - Jena

Note: It's an informational book, not a novel, you can read chapters in any order you want. It doesn't have to be read cover to cover.

How does Meditation help with Chronic Pain?

From: Hope Instilled

Chronic Pain Resources
When you have severe chronic pain you probably want to do anything to stop the pain. But, you find moving hurts, ignoring it hurts, doing nothing hurts. However, the physical pain is not the only pain you face. Your mind can start to suffer too, with concerns on whether the pain will get worse or possibly never go away. And those thoughts could actually make your suffering worse.

Stress is actually one of the reasons for increased pain. Stress causes your nervous system to be aroused which aggravates pain and is then another stressor. Meditation helps to reduce stress, therefore reducing pain in the body.

Latest medical advances show it can be more powerful to explore the sensations of pain and illness in your body than the most commonly prescribed medical painkillers. This is the focus behind an ancient form of meditation called “mindfulness.”

Exploring Wellness: Relationships

Healthy relationships are a vital component of health and wellbeing. There is compelling evidence that strong relationships contribute to a long, healthy, and happy life. Conversely, the health risks from being alone or isolated in one's life are comparable to the risks associated with cigarette smoking, blood pressure, and obesity.

Chronic Pain Resources6 Tips for Improving Relationships with Chronic Pain

By: Health Central

1.   Reassess Your Relationships
Eliminating toxic friends will give you more energy to put into your real friendships with people who genuinely care about you and share your value system. Of course, if the toxic person in your life is a family member, you probably can’t eliminate them completely, but at least try to limit your contact with them as much as possible.

4.   Make Friends with Other Patients
Let’s face it, sometimes we all need to talk to someone who truly understands what we’re going through because they’ve experienced it themselves. As much as our healthy friends may love and support us, if they haven’t lived with chronic pain, they can’t really relate to what we’re feeling. If you don’t already have friends like this, you can reach out an make new friends through local or online support groups.

6.   Remember That Friendship Takes Two
Sometimes we become so concerned about other people understanding our problems and needs that we forget to try to see things from their perspective. Try to remember that your friend’s life is just as important to him as yours is to you.

DIY Natural Recipe: Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne can relieve the pain of arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines, diabetic neuropathy, sciatica and back aches.

These peppers are able to relieve pain because they contain capsaicin. Capsaicin blocks substance P, which is a neurotransmitter that relays information and triggers the body to feel pain. In addition, cayenne contains beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant and prevents free radical damage.

    HOW TO PREPARE

To use cayenne topically, mix the cayenne pepper with honey to form a paste which can then be applied to the painful area. To reduce inflammation or the pain associated with inflammation, cayenne pepper can be taken internally.
